Buying car parts online: a pre-checkout checklist

A few minutes checking the exact vehicle application, product reference and return terms can prevent avoidable delays. Use this checklist before paying for a replacement part.

Before opening a product listing

  • Have the vehicle's make, generation, model, production period and engine details available.
  • Identify the relevant position or system: front/rear, left/right, axle, brake version or body style.
  • Find an OE reference from a reliable, vehicle-specific source if possible.
  • Note any modifications or previous repairs that could change the installed configuration.

On the product page

  1. Confirm the selected vehicle. Check the returned make, model and engine, not just a green “fits” indicator.
  2. Read application notes. Check production-date limits, engine codes, dimensions, axle/side, connectors and exclusions.
  3. Compare identifiers. Match the listing's cross-reference to the OE number and verify that the number applies to your exact vehicle. See how to find an OE number.
  4. Check what is in the box. Confirm whether seals, clips, sensors, bolts, paired parts or installation accessories are included.
  5. Review manufacturer details. Identify the part maker and product documentation; do not treat a generic quality claim as fitment proof.

Check delivery and returns

Before checkout, review the seller's current delivery estimate, shipping charges, destination restrictions and any duties or taxes that may apply. Read the return policy for time limits, condition of packaging, installation restrictions, return shipping and exclusions. Return rules can vary by country and by product, so use the terms shown by the seller for your order.

Final basket check

  • Correct item number, quantity and vehicle application.
  • Correct delivery country, address and delivery option.
  • Final price, shipping cost, taxes and currency.
  • Return terms and order cancellation conditions.
  • Order confirmation and reference saved for later.
Stop if uncertain. If the catalogue and OE reference disagree, ask the seller to confirm the exact item number in writing before ordering. If the part is safety-critical, seek qualified advice.
